N.S. takes first step to remove trade barriers between provinces

todayFebruary 25, 2025

Background

The PCs are trying to tear down barriers that prevent Nova Scotia from trading with other provinces.

That means tested goods from other provinces would be treated the same as local products.

The new bill would also recognize the certifications of truck drivers and other workers from other provinces.

However, other provinces and the federal government have to create similar rules for it to work.

Premier Tim Houston said other provinces and the feds have not created their own plans yet, but he’s spoken to other provinces about the bill, especially with Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

Houston said the bill will amplify the discussion about removing trade barriers, and because of that, he hopes others will create similar rules.

The move is part of the province’s effort to rely less on the United States after President Donald Trump threatened to hit Canadian exports with massive tariffs.
