Canada is fighting back against the United States and its 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
Federal officials announced Wednesday a 25 per cent reciprocal tariff on steel and aluminum from the U.S.
The news came just hours after a tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum heading into the U.S. went into effect.
Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc said the dollar-for-dollar tariff will apply to nearly $30 billion worth of U.S. imports.
“This includes steel products worth $12.6 billion and aluminum products worth $3 billion, as well as additional imported U.S. goods worth $14.2 billion,” LeBlanc told reporters.
The list of additional products affected by countertariffs includes computers, sports equipment and cast-iron products, he said.
LeBlanc said these tariffs are in addition to the 25 per cent countertariffs on $30 billion of imports from the United States in response to U.S. tariffs put in place on March 4.
“With these most recent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, the U.S. administration is once again inserting disruption and disorder into an incredibly successful trading partnership and raising the costs of every day goods for Canadian and American households alike,” he added.
“We will not stand idly by while our iconic steel and aluminum industries are being unfairly targeted.”
The new tariffs from Canada will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.
