Background

A former Nova Scotia MLA is one of five new members of the Senate.

Tony Ince was appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday.

“He is a strong advocate for social justice, equity, and diversity, particularly within African Nova Scotian communities,” said a news release from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Ince was first elected to represent the riding of Cole Harbour-Portland Valley in 2013.

He was re-elected in 2017 for that district and in 2021 for the new riding of Cole Harbour.

Ince, who retired in 2024, held a number of portfolios during his political career, including African Nova Scotian Affairs, Communications Nova Scotia, as well as Communities, Culture and Heritage.

All 105 seats in the Senate are now filled following Friday’s appointments.
