Liberals set to choose new leader to replace Trudeau

todayMarch 9, 2025

Background

The Justin Trudeau era is in its final hours.

The Liberals are set to choose a new leader and prime minister after a quick campaign and chaotic few weeks dealing with Donald Trump.

Voting began on Wednesday and concludes Sunday afternoon. The winning candidate will be announced shortly after voting ends.

Four candidates are seeking the job, with former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland considered the frontrunners.

Frank Baylis, a former Montreal-area MP and Ontario MP Karina Gould are also in the running.

The leadership race was called after Trudeau’s decision to resign and prorogue parliament in January amidst declining popular support and internal pressure from some Liberal MPs to step down.

The transfer of power to the new leader has yet to be determined and if an imminent election call will come from the new leader.

The House of Commons is set to resume on March 27th and the government will likely face non-confidence motions to try and trigger an election.
