Lunenburg monitoring tariff impacts, no municipal policy changes made

todayMarch 10, 2025

Background

Lunenburg is closely watching the impact of tariffs on its local economy but has not introduced any municipal policy changes in response. Mayor Jamie Myra says the town is focused on supporting businesses and maintaining economic stability.

“Tourism is a significant part of our local economy, and we recognize that policy changes—both in the U.S. and here in Nova Scotia—can have ripple effects,” Myra said.

While some levels of government are considering procurement restrictions in response to tariffs, Lunenburg’s purchasing policy already includes provisions that prioritize local and Canadian businesses. Myra says the town will continue to monitor how tariffs affect material costs for municipal projects and infrastructure work.

“We are mindful that disruptions—whether in trade, border crossings, or consumer confidence—could affect travel and spending,” he said.

Myra noted that the town is working with the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities and provincial and federal partners to track developments, explore mitigation strategies, and advocate for policies that protect local economic interests.

In the meantime, businesses and residents are already taking action by making a conscious effort to support local retailers, restaurants, and Canadian suppliers.
