A Nova Scotian mayor says her trip to Washington, D.C. was positive.
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood was part of a delegation from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities attending a conference with nearly 3,000 American officials.
She says one of the biggest things she heard was how sorry they are about President Trump’s tariffs.
“A lot of apologies, some quieter than others depending on what party they were affiliated with. Many didn’t understand that tariffs, regardless of which way they flow, are going to negatively affect both countries,” said Mayor Mood.
Vice-President J.D. Vance also spoke at the event.
Mood says he spoke about the importance of municipal governments, but made sure local leaders knew to follow the Trump administration’s rules.
She says tariffs will hit everyone at the local level.
“Everything is going to be more expensive. We’re doing everything we can to help the U.S. understand, and hopefully lead to the tariffs stopping and us continuing with our friendship.”
