The Region of Queens is considering whether to waive the South Shore Flying Club’s annual $4,000 rent at the South Shore Regional Airport in Greenfield.

At last week’s council meeting, District 6 Councillor Stewart Jenkins raised the issue, noting the non-profit club maintains the facility but has limited revenue compared to other airport users. Councillors supported the idea but voted to defer the decision until their next meeting on March 25 to review the club’s financial statements.

The flying club, which has 35 to 40 members, signed a 20-year lease with the municipality in 2023. As part of that agreement, the club maintains the hangars, runway, and other airport infrastructure. Another tenant, the Nova Scotia Drag Racers Association, also leases part of the airport.

The airport was nearly sold two years ago, but council reversed course after public opposition. Since then, the flying club has struggled with operating costs, including a $6,500 insurance bill. Club members say they run occasional fundraisers but cannot sustain themselves while also paying rent.

The next council meeting will determine whether the club will receive financial relief.
