Animal road related incidents rise in PEI

todayApril 30, 2025

Background

A warning from the RCMP in Prince Edward Island, keep an eye out for animals on roadways.

They’ve had around 80 animal-related calls over the past year, and that’s about 20 more than the year before.

The majority of calls involved escaped farm animals, including cows, horses, goats and pigs.

Several cases have posed serious risks to public safety.

In one incident in Albany, two vehicles were involved.   Two drivers were injured, and two cows were killed.

RCMP say in another incident, over 80 goats and two sheep had to be seized under the Provincial Stray Livestock Act.

Under the Act, a peace officer may capture and impound stray livestock if the owner is unknown, cannot be located promptly, fails to retrieve the animals, or has repeatedly allowed the animals to roam freely.

While less common, RCMP say they have also responded to reports of geese obstructing traffic and vehicles stopped dangerously to observe roadside wildlife.
