A remarkable comeback for Mark Carney’s Liberals.
Just three months ago, the Liberals were destined for an election loss with Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister.
But Carney eliminated the unpopular Carbon Tax, and gained another minority government for the party.
Political scientist Dr. Tom Urbaniak says he’s never seen a turnaround like this.
“The polls did tighten a little bit in the final weeks, with the Liberals about two percent ahead of the Conservatives in the popular vote. 85 percent of the Canadian population voted for the top two parties, which we haven’t seen in a long time,” said Urbaniak.
He says Carney will have to present a united front to U.S. president Donald Trump, while managing a challenging parliamentary situation with the Bloc Quebecois having the balance of power in committees.
Urbaniak adds that Carney did hit the right notes in his victory speech.
“He touched on divisions with respect to age and income, and the pain that many are feeling in trying to get by in life. That has to be front and centre for this new government.”
Urbaniak expects Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre to double down on staying as leader, despite losing his seat.
“I’m curious on whether any senior Conservatives will make public comments on reviewing or replacing the leadership. The window is there for the next couple of days for disgruntled Conservatives.”
