Prime Minister Mark Carney’s decision to have King Charles read the Throne speech was a significant one, according to a Royal Historian.

“I think it’s an important reminder. It’s a teaching moment. It is something. The Monarchy’s greatest enemy in this country is apathy and a lack of understanding. Even in the media, we hear regularly the King referred to as the British King or the King of England, so we forget that he fulfills exactly the same function in this country, even though we don’t see him on a daily basis,” Spokesperson for the Monarchist League of Canada Barry MacKenzie says.

He feels it has helped to educate those who are unaware of the role of the Royal family.

“It’s an important chance to remind, not just youth but Canadians more generally, that the King is still very much our head of State, and he is here to lend that value of that soft power in this sensitive time.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla were in Ottawa on a two-day visit this week. The King delivered the Throne speech on Tuesday.

Charles became the first monarch to deliver the country’s throne speech in nearly half a century on Tuesday.

During the speech, King Charles reflected on the 1957 visit to Canada by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, to open Parliament.
