May 5 is a national day of awareness and remembrance. It’s known as Red Dress Day.
Red dresses are hung, the colour red is worn, and local events are held across the country to honour missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people.
The name Red Dress Day was created by Métis artist Jaime Black in 2010, when she created the REDress project.
According to the Government of Canada, more than 63 per cent of Indigenous women in the country have experienced physical or sexual assault in their lifetime.
