A sad time at the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park in the Halifax area.
A beloved resident black bear has passed away at the age of 14.
In a post on Facebook, the park announced the solemn news about “Bonnie Bear” who they say has been a part of their family since she arrived as an orphaned cub alongside her brother.
At this time, they say the cause of her death is not known and a postmortem is in progress.
“On Monday morning, we provided her brother the opportunity to be near her —a practice that, while still being studied, has shown potential to help animals process loss in some species. The two siblings had never been separated, and we are giving her brother extra attention during this time,” says the park.
The post goes on to say that they are monitoring the brother closely to make sure he is physically and mentally well.
“We thank you for your support and compassion as we mourn the loss of this beautiful bear who brought joy to so many,” adds the park.
Since the post was made Wednesday, there has been an outpouring of condolences from the public in the comments about the bear with memories shared.
