Background

A heartbreaking loss for the Moncton Wildcats as their battle for the Memorial Cup comes to an end.

The Wildcats fell to the OHL’s London Knights 5-2 in the semifinal game on Friday night.

London scored early in the first and held onto the lead for much of the period until Caleb Desnoyers tied things up with less than two minutes to go.

The Knights made it 2-1 about five-and-a-half minutes into the second, but Moncton tied it up again just over two minutes later with a goal from Dyllan Gill — his third of the tournament.

Things stayed tied up until early in the third, when Blake Montgomery scored the game-winning goal for the Knights.

Jesse Nurmi extended London’s lead to two goals with less than seven minutes to go in the period, and Easton Cowan added an empty-net goal with less than two minutes left.

The Knights now one on to the Memorial Cup final against the undefeated Medicine Hat Tigers on Sunday night.
