The Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League (NSJHL) has officially withdrawn from the Don Johnson Memorial Cup, ending its participation in the Atlantic junior hockey championship effective immediately.

The decision was confirmed following a vote by the league’s board of governors.

In a statement, NSJHL president Gerard MacDonald said the move reflects the league’s commitment to internal development and long-term sustainability.

“This was not a decision we took lightly,” MacDonald said. “As the landscape of junior hockey in our region continues to evolve, we believe it is essential to prioritize the internal development and strengthening of our league’s operations and structures.”

The NSJHL emphasized that it remains dedicated to supporting its players and teams, and that the withdrawal is part of a broader strategy to ensure the league’s future success.

The league includes teams such as the Membertou Jr. Miners, Eskasoni Eagles, Strait Pirates, Antigonish AA Munro Bulldogs, Pictou County Scotians, East Hants Penguins, Capstone Colts, Sackville Blazers, South Shore Lumberjacks, Valley Maple Leafs, and Brookfield Elks.

The Antigonish Bulldogs had been dominant in recent years, winning the Don Johnson Cup in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Other NSJHL teams have also had strong showings in the tournament’s history, with multiple championships dating back to the 1980s.
