Canada ups tariffs on steel imports

todayJuly 16, 2025

Background

Ottawa is trying to protect Canadian steel.

In the face of 50 percent tariffs from the U.S, Prime Minister Mark Carney tightened tariffs of his own.

The government wants to restrict and reduce foreign steel imports.

Carney says that includes Chinese-made steel from all non-U.S. countries.

“We must diversify our trade relationships, and we must rely more on Canadian steel for Canadian projects,” said the PM during an announcement in Hamilton, Ontario.

He says they need to better support our companies and workers in this time of change.

“Canada has what the world needs, we are becoming an energy superpower, and are a leader in the building blocks of a modern economy.”

The feds are planning a $1 billion investment.
