Now that we are getting into the thick of summer, many are flocking to the beach.
The province’s lifeguards have tips on how to make your trip to the beach as safe as possible.
Gavin Shklanka with the Life Saving Service says the first one is sun exposure.
“Melanoma is a thing. People should have sunscreen and SPF on them. And, while they should reapply every two hours, they should wear a hat, light shirt, they should have sunglasses. They should take break, drink water,” says Shklanka.
He says this is especially important when the UV is at its highest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
There are 24 sites around the province where you will see Nova Scotia lifeguards.
You’ll notice their flags and that, says Shklanka, is where the safest spot along the water is.
“That’s where our lifeguards are posted. It’s where we’re directly watching. It’s where help arrives the fastest. It’s for everyone. Families, sole swimmers, visitors… you name it. And that’s updated each day based on the beach conditions,” adds Shklanka.
They do have walking patrols, however, to help monitor everyone.
If you have trouble with accessibility, the Life Saving Service has you covered.
At seven out of their 24 sites, there are mobility chairs and mats.
Shklanka says the mats make it helpful to get in the water, where the chair floats, can withstand a lot of weight, and navigate through some harsh terrain.
“We’re actually working with Parks Nova Scotia and Department of Natural Resources to try and get more at these sites because there’s a need for it. We want to make sure that the beach is accessible to all,” says Shklanka.
He adds, they are always monitoring the environment and will keep you up to date on changing conditions.
