How will Canada approach potential trade deal with U.S?

Background

Will we finally see trade peace between Canada and the United States?

A deadline to reach a deal approaches on Friday as several tariffs remain in place.

Expert on Canada/U.S. relations Dr. Asa McKercher says it’ll be interesting to see how Prime Minister Carney approaches it.

“And what’s been one of the issues in the deals that President Donald Trump has struck with Europe and Japan, it’s been a one-sided kind of deal. The question is, whether or not Canada is willing to give in a lot to Mr. Trump just to get a deal done,” said Dr. McKercher.

Carney said Canada is in ‘intense negotiations’ with our neighbours to the south.

Dr. McKercher says Canada is trying to get the best deal they can, but it may come down to what President Trump wants.

Many deadlines have come and gone, with tariffs slapped on the steel and auto industry.

When asked if Canadians are tired of tariff talk, he says it’s been day-after-day of President Trump’s antics.

“I think that does wear on Canadians who at the end of the day want to be able to afford goods and have a good paying job. It’s created some economic discontent and chaos.”

This comes as the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement is set to undergo a mandatory review next year.
