A somber tribute to lost fishers is coming up in Guysborough County.
The Provincial Seamen’s Memorial Service will be August 10th at 2 p.m. in Canso. The rain location will be the Canso United Baptist Church.
Each year, the names on the memorial are read as wreaths are placed in memory of those lost at sea from the area and other coastal communities.
The local Lions club built the memorial in 1976 to mark the 75th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Canso.
In 1989, the province proclaimed the second Sunday in August as Seamen’s Memorial Day.
Laying of the wreaths to sea and a final blessing will be at 1 p.m. on the following Sunday, August 17th from Whitman’s Wharf.
