Shelburne, Yarmouth donations pour in for Annapolis Valley firefighters

todayAugust 18, 2025

Background

A Shelburne County group made a special weekend delivery.

Municipal councillors Heidi Williams-Wagner and Paula Sutherland delivered supplies to firefighters battling the West Dalhousie wildfire.

Thanks to community donations, they were able to take water, Gatorade and other items to departments in Annapolis, Bridgetown, Nictaux and New Germany.

Sutherland says people in Shelburne County know what that community is going through.

“You can’t say enough about this end of the province. They just give and give. We’ve kept a tally and receipts, and bought and bought until we were fully loaded, then took off for the Valley,” said Sutherland.

Sutherland says people from across Nova Scotia were quick to help during the 2023 wildfires, including the 23,000 hectare Barrington Lake blaze.

She says they know, it’s time to return the favour.

“I don’t think it was even three hours, and we had $2,500 already donated to us, and a full truck of water, Gatorade and other supplies.”

Community support was so overwhelming, they have more to deliver on Wednesday.

Sutherland says support came in from all over Shelburne and Yarmouth counties.

“Two fishing alliances have reached out and they sent cheques, we’ve bought gift cards for food. Whatever they need, we’re in constant contact with someone on the ground there.”
