Nova Scotia’s Wind West project is front and centre in Ottawa this week as Premier Tim Houston meets with federal officials to push the offshore wind development forward.

Houston met with Tim Hodgson, the federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources to discuss the project on Wednesday.

He will also meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney, pushing for federal support on the project on Thursday.

Ottawa has already identified Wind West as a project of national significance.

Wind West is designed to harness offshore wind off Nova Scotia’s coast, with the potential to generate enough electricity to cover roughly a quarter of Canada’s total needs. Proponents say it could position Nova Scotia as a clean energy hub, create jobs, and attract new investment.

The province recently tabled the Powering the Offshore Act to modernize legislation for offshore and tidal energy development, including updates to support transmission projects like the Nova Scotia–New Brunswick intertie.

It also released a strategy outlining federal measures needed to advance Wind West, including access to clean energy tax credits and Canada Infrastructure Bank financing.

Officials say the project represents both an economic and environmental opportunity, linking Nova Scotia’s offshore resources to broader national energy security goals.
