Record advance voter turnout in Canada, final early options close tonight

todayApril 22, 2025

Background

Elections Canada says early voter turnout in the federal election has reached record levels.

An estimated 7.3 million electors voted over the four days of advance polling held between April 18 and April 21. That marks a 25 percent increase from the 5.8 million advance voters in the 2021 federal election.

The agency notes these are preliminary figures, and some poll locations may still be reporting. A full riding-by-riding breakdown is expected to be posted soon at elections.ca.

Although advance polls are now closed, there is still one more opportunity to vote early. Canadians can apply to vote by mail or cast a special ballot at any Elections Canada office until 6 p.m. local time tonight, April 22.

Special ballots allow electors to vote from outside their home riding and are available at roughly 500 offices across the country. Once someone applies for a special ballot, they cannot vote at advance polls or on election day.

After the 6 p.m. deadline, the only remaining opportunity to vote will be in person on election day, which is set for Monday, April 28.
