In the final stretch of the election campaign, the cost of living is the top issue for Canadians, according to a survey from Narrative Research and the Logit Group.

It was the top issue in March for 67 per cent of people, followed by the U.S. trade war at 53 per cent.

A month later, 72 per cent of people are worried most about the cost living, while the U.S. trade war fell slightly, being the biggest concern for 49 per cent of Canadians.

Health care was the third most important issue, rising from 36 per cent in March to 39 per cent in April.

People younger than 55 were more focused on the cost of living, while baby boomers worried most about health care and the U.S. trade war.

Women were also more likely than men to say healthcare was a key issue.

The data surveyed 1,230 people 18 or older between April 9 and 12.

Researchers asked people to list their top three issues based on this list of randomized options:

• U.S. trade or trade war and tariffs
• Cost of living
• Improving the economy
• Child care
• Climate change or protecting the environment
• Foreign policy
• Guns or gun control
• Healthcare
• Poverty alleviation
• Housing affordability
• Income support
• Reconciliation with Indigenous Canadians
• Indigenous services
• Jobs
• Long-term care
• Oil pipelines
• Racial inequality
• Treatment of senior citizens
• Assistance for small businesses
• Some other issue or issues, and specify
• None of the above
• Not sure

The federal election is Monday, April 28.
