Background

Peter Coade, a trusted voice in weather forecasting across the Maritimes, has passed away at the age of 82.

Coade, who had been hospitalized at Hants Community Hospital since November, died early Saturday. His family confirmed he had been living with dementia.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Coade became a household name, delivering forecasts with warmth and accuracy.

His approachable style and deep knowledge made him a reliable presence, whether warning residents about incoming storms or celebrating stretches of sunny skies.

For Coade, forecasting was more than a profession—it was a lifelong commitment to helping people prepare for the ever-changing elements.

His appreciation for meteorology was evident when he retired from CBC in 2016, after decades of guiding Maritimers through unpredictable weather patterns.

During his career, Coade covered numerous significant weather events, including hurricanes and winter storms that shaped life in the region.

His dedication earned him the Guinness World Record for the longest tenure as a weather forecaster at the time, though the record has since been surpassed.

Outside of his professional life, Coade cherished time with his family.

Among those paying tribute was longtime CTV News (Atlantic) journalist Steve Murphy, who remembered Coade as a pioneer in broadcasting and a forecaster in the tradition of his mentor, Rube Hornstein.

“I am saddened to learn of the passing of my long-time on-air partner and friend, meteorologist Peter Coade,” Murphy wrote in a social media post.

Coade’s legacy as a trusted source of weather information will live on, and his contributions to meteorology and broadcasting remain deeply valued.
