Dal issues lockout notice to faculty members

todayAugust 18, 2025

Background

Uncertainty remains for students at Atlantic Canada’s largest university as labour disruptions loom approaching the start of the academic year.

Dalhousie University President Kim Brooks issued an update on labour relations with the Dalhousie Faculty Association Monday morning.

In her message, Brooks states that Dal has filed a notice of intent to lock out DFA members at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, unless a tentative agreement is reached before then.

The association represents nearly 1,000 professors, instructors, librarians and professional counsellors.

Contract negotiations have been ongoing since May, with compensation a key issue.

Conciliation talks concluded mid-July, and the board requested a vote on its final offer last week. The faculty association said it would not recommend accepting the offer.

According to a message to students on the Dal website, in a DFA lockout, campuses would remain open, but classes taught by faculty would be suspended.
